Description
UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Peter Thomson announced his intention to convene a high-level debate on SDG 11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable). The event is expected to bring together mayors, community administrators, city resilience leaders, and other stakeholders to focus on implementation of SDG 11 and to discuss a report mandated by the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) in its outcome document, the New Urban Agenda. The New Urban Agenda calls for a two-day High-level Meeting of the UNGA to discuss the effective implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the positioning of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). The New Urban Agenda further calls for the UN Secretary-General to submit to a report on the effectiveness, efficiency, accountability and oversight of UN-HABITAT, including its mandate, governance structure, work and financial capabilities.
