NBS African case; Partnership for collaborative governance
This is a case of a cross-sectoral water catchment programme encompassing the civil society, government, academia and private sector partnership. On lead by the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the project aims at raising supportive grey infrastructure to boost the green existent ecosystem so as to promote water conservation and sustainable use. Two major cities Durban and Pietermaritzburg have been encompassed and supplied by this water project. The project consists of naturally existent and functioning ecosystems as the catchment areas.
Pearl Gola, the Ecological Infrastructure Co-ordinator, Greater uMngeni Catchment, South African National Biodiversity Institute highlights that this project, aligned to nature based solutions for water signifies the relevance of nature based solutions in addressing the societal challenges affiliated to accessibility to clean water, additionally sustainable water use within the two cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. These natural water sources are inclusive of wetlands, rivers, streams, underground water. These have been supported by the use of built infrastructure for pumping and purification of water for use by the adjacent communities within the cities.
Accessibility to clean and natural water is an ecosystem service and prerequisite for daily livelihood among most communities around the African continent. Nature based solutions for water play a significant role in addressing the challenge of water crisis which is a common setback towards attaining sustainable public health.
