International day of the girl child (11th October)
For many girls around the world opportunities that are usually a basic human right such as access to health care and education, do not come easy.
Issues such as child marriage, female genital mutilation and gender inequality still plague many areas o the world. These issues are made worse by gender norms, lack of education and biases that exist within and around the communities.
As we celebrate these years international day of the girl child, we celebrate strides that have been made with more girls taking up leadership positions, less and less girls getting married as children, the outlawing of female genital multination and the more girls attending school and getting an education.
We are still nowhere close to achieving equal rights and gender equality but everyday we make steps towards accomplishing those goals.
