21 September - The International Day of Peace
The 2021 theme for the International Day of Peace is “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world”.
This as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.
With the world still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and we are inspired to think creatively and cooperatively about how to improve everyone's recovery, build resilience, and transform our world into one that is more equal, just, egalitarian, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.
The pandemic is known to have hit the underprivileged and marginalized groups the hardest. People caught in conflict are especially more vulnerable in terms of lack of healthcare acess.
In line with the Secretary-General's appeal for a global ceasefire last March, in February 2021 the Security Council unanimously passed a resolution calling for Member States to support a "sustained humanitarian pause" to local conflicts. The global ceasefire must continue to be honoured, to ensure people caught in conflict have access to lifesaving vaccinations and treatments.
Humanity is currently facing a common enemy, that is the COVID -19 and in order to beat it we need to make peace with each other so that we can recover from the devastating effects of the pandemic.
It is also important that we make peace with nature. Climate change is not slowing down, despite travel restrictions and economic slowdowns. We require a green and sustainable global economy that generates jobs, decreases emissions, and increases climate resilience.
Life is better in a world where peace exists.
