LIVE launch of the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2021
The tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced, killing more than 8 million people a year around the world. More than 7 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 1.2 million are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Over 80% of the 1.3 billion tobacco users worldwide live in low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of tobacco-related illness and death is heaviest.
Cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco use worldwide. The eighth WHO Report on the global tobacco epidemic summarizes national efforts to implement the most effective demand reduction measures from the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control that are proven to reduce tobacco use. These measures are known collectively as MPOWER. Many countries are making progress in the fight against tobacco.
More than half of all countries and half the world’s population are now covered by at least two MPOWER measures at the highest level of achievement. The six MPOWER measures are monitoring tobacco use and preventive measures; protecting people from tobacco smoke; offering help to quit; warning about the dangers of tobacco; enforcing bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship; and raising taxes on tobacco.
