Mangroves, Guardians of the Coast
Mangroves are clusters of diverse trees and shrubs that grow in tidal coasts. The intricate root system of mangroves is home to a multitude of organisms who have a core value in the eco system.
Mangrove forests stabilize the coastline reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides. The intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators. Small but significant efforts are sprouting up, regenerating the forests of the sea shores which is home to many. Land reclamation and patching the cost with mangrove forest is the solution to the recent incidents along the cost. It's expensive and time consuming but the help of the costal population and volunteers can be sought for this. Hope some environmental agencies come up with this idea in a more refined and technical manner.
Lets all work towards restoring the eco system and the eco system cannot be complete with the coastal ecosystem that includes the mangroves.
Mangroves, specifically the underwater habitat their roots provide, offer critical nursing environments for juveniles of thousands of fish species, from 1-inch gobies to 10-foot sharks.
