UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. 26th June
Torture according to the United Nations Convention means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed.
Although torture has been prohibited both in the international and domestic regions, it still occurs with many using situations such as war or instability to perpetuate such crimes.
The day is support of victims of torture seeks to bring awareness to the issue and amplify the voices of those who have undergone such inhuman acts.
We all have a part to play in speaking out against torture as it not only affects the victims but also their families and the institutions that fail on the front of human rights.
