Environmental degradation is both a driver and consequence of disasters, reducing the capacity of the environment to meet social and ecological needs.
Over half (55%) of global GDP is dependent on high functioning ecosystem services. However, a fifth of countries globally (20%) might see their ecosystems collapse. Two-thirds of Earth's lands are on pace to lose water as the climate warms - that's a problem for people, crops and forests.
We need to act to avoid more degradation and consequences to come. Innovative schemes including ‘green infrastructure’ projects that maximise ecosystem services, including the reduction of flood risks, need to be implemented. We also need to support integrated community-level approaches, and scale them up as that is where we will start seeing the changes, and impact of our actions.
