Holistic approaches to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation
Biodiversity loss accounts for over a 10% loss in the GDP globally. These have been primarily accelerated by the ill approaches and modes of interaction with the natural resources and the associated derivative ecosystem services. Solutions to the core environmental challenges lie in the identification and clear interpretation of the linkages among climate change, land degradation and biodiversity loss. These represent the three main global environmental challenges. Relevant to put at the center of focus are joint criteria of addressing the three environmental crises; analysing feasible institutional frameworks that will aid and enhance an ease of flow in mobilising for the financial resources.
Following hosting of the CBD COP14 by Egypt in 2014, resultant has been the launch of the Egyptian Initiative on a coherent approach of the synergies around land degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss as the core environmental challenges. Major of merits associated with this technique has been integration of financial resources to aid tackle the three environmental crises in a rather holistic manner and approach.
Egypt particularly has been able to contribute significantly to tackling the crises by linking with the necessary ministries through the period of the pandemic, integration of nature through establishment of environmental sustainability guidelines slated to be compulsory for all ministries to comply with alongside their investment plans. This projects estimates that within 3 years, 50% of the Egyptian finance local interventions will be green projects incorporative of nature. There is also establishment of complete partnerships with the private sector and local communities. This is in an approach to foster sustainable utilisation of the natural resources so as to derive and appreciate the ecosystem goods and services that come along. In about one and a half year, the Egyptian government has also incorporated approximately 9 local communities around 9 protected areas into a full collaborative natural resource management pool.
