ROAD TO ENDING TUBERCULOSIS EPIDEMIC IN UGANDA BY 2035
Statistics shows that in Uganda more than 60,000 people are diagnosed with TB every year. However, an estimated 30,000 with probable TB symptoms are not diagnosed every year. This is attributed to the use of a simple microscopy test in most rural Ugandan hospitals, a test which misses out on most TB cases. There are two types of TB, active and latent TB. Latent TB ends up being spread to different people since they don't show signs and symptoms of TB.
It is hence upon policy makers in the country to make tremendous efforts in the coming 15 years if we are to end the epidemic by 2035. We can achieve this by increasing TB financing, improvement in TB research in areas of new drugs, vaccines and innovations.
About one quarter of the world's population is infected with tuberculosis (TB) bacteria.
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain.
Not everyone infected with TB bacteria becomes sick.
TB spreads by airborne droplets.
