World's first sailing boat made of 100% recycled plastic
The world's first sailing boat made of 100% recycled plastic dubbed flipflopi is set to sail on lake victoria starting its expedition in Kenya before heading to Tanzania and Uganda.
The recycled plastic is waste colected from the beaches of lamu down to Diani by the community.
Atleast 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans and make up 80% of all marine debris from surface waters to deep sea sediments.
Marine species ingest or are entagled by plastic debris which cause severe injuries and death.
Plastic pollution threatens food security, human health, coastal tourism and contributes to climate change.
There is need for recycling and reusing plastic products and support for research and innovation to develop new products to replace single use plastic to prevent and reduce plastic pollution.
The flipflopi is a good initiave at it involves the local community cleaning up the beaches and recycling the waste
Over 300million tons of plastic are produced every year, half of which is used to design single item use such as straws, cups etc.
Atleast 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year.
Floating plastic depris are currently the most abundant items of marine litter.
