SDG 3 SDG 9 SDG 17

All countries are trying to provide greater access to health services in the most cost-effective way. For many, this involves the provision of Universal Health Coverage, which has strong support globally from the United Nations (UN) and WHO. To achieve this, technology adoption plays a key role.

The application of healthcare information systems assist healthcare providers in improving the quality of patient care and streamline healthcare processes. In the developing countries, various hospital information systems have witnessed widespread adoption in the health sector. Example of the systems adopted include, electronic health records (EHRs), patient engagement solutions, pharmacy information systems, and patient engagement solutions.

Digitization of healthcare data has created new way of doing things in remote patient care. The application of wearable technologies is positively influencing the demand for healthcare information system. In this regard, the growing application of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) has helped in reducing the burden of lifestyle and chronic diseases world over. The rising deployment of robots in automating routine healthcare operations is also an encouraging development.

To make the adoption of healthcare information systems fast and more impactful, governments should be at the forefront supporting initiatives that leverage the potential of healthcare digitization.
