Environmental dimension of sustainable development.
Integration of the economic, social and environmental dimensions is key to achieving sustainable
development. Integration of these three dimensions is an urgent shift in policy approach, there must be a shift from a predominantly short-term policy horizon to one that seeks long-term benefits for all.
Social, economic and environmental challenges are interlinked and must all be tackled together. The links between the economy and the environment are manifold: the environment provides resources to the economy, and acts as a sink for emissions and waste. Poor environmental quality in turn affects economic growth and wellbeing by lowering the quantity and quality of resources or due to e.g. health impacts.
As per the 2030 agenda, we need to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations.
“Decision makers must walk the talk. Long-term commitments must be matched by immediate actions to launch the decade of transformation that people and planet so desperately need”, Mr. Guterres.
